England's Penalty Misses.

After watching England Ladies crash out on penalties to France, Editor Dean Mears takes us through a top (or bottom) 10 of England's worst penalty misses.
10) Jimmy Crabtree vs. Ireland 1899- Jimmy Crabtree became the first England player to miss a penalty after his spot kick was saved by James Lewis. It had no impact on the end result however, as England went on to win 13-2.

9) David Beckham vs. France Euro 2004- The first of three Beckham entries. His tame spot kick was beaten away by Barthez in the France goal. England went on to lose the match 2-1 thanks to a Zidane free kick.

8) Bobby Charlton vs. Scotland 1960- A double miss for Bobby Charlton after he first effort which was saved by Scotland 'keeper Frank Haffey, the referee ordered the spot kick should be retaken and Charlton duly stepped up and put the ball wide of the post.

7) David Beckham vs. Turkey 2003- On a rainy evening, on a pitch without a proper drainage system, Beckham slipped at the vital moment and skied his spot kick high over the bar.

Beckham losing his footing.
6) David Beckham vs. Portugal Euro 2004- Another dodgy pitch, this time Beckham tripped as he connected with the ball sending it into the crowd behind the goal. He wasn't the only one to miss in that shoot-out though.

5) Darius Vassell vs. Portugal Euro 2004- Many blame the sending off of Wayne Rooney for England's defeat to Portugal at Euro 2004, however it was Vassell who missed the deciding spot kick against a 'keeper with no gloves.

Portugal's Ricardo makes light work of Vassell's penalty, he doesn't even need gloves.
4) David Batty vs. Argentina World Cup 1998- Again, Batty was perhaps lucky Beckham was sent off in this game, so his penalty miss was overshadowed. Well David, Finding Row Z didn't forget. But it was the first penalty of your career, so I'll let you off.

3) Gareth Southgate vs. Germany Euro 1996- England were so close to making another final, 6 years after the heartbreak of Italia '90, but those pesky Germans were at it again. Southgate's missed kick sent England out, things went from bad to worse for Southgate who appeared in a Pizza Hut advert with two men who pip him in this list.

2) Stuart Pearce vs. West Germany World Cup 1990- The whole nation believed, then we saw Gazza's tears, could England make the World Cup final? No. Pearce's spot kick was saved by the legs of Illgner, which left Pearce to join Gazza with the crying.

1) Chris Waddle vs. West Germany World Cup 1990- I don't think this needs words.
