Would Rangers or Celtic be good enough for the Premiership?

With Rangers heading out of the Champions League qualifying to Mid Table Swedish side Malmo, Editor Dean Mears took to Twitter to find out where the people think Rangers and Celtic would stack up against English opposition.

Lets face it, when you say Scottish football you mean Glasgow football, there's only two teams that compete year in, year out and they are Rangers and Celtic. It's been debated in the past whether these two teams should compete with teams south of the border, seeing as they dominate their leagues so much they must be good enough right?

I asked you wonderful people on Twitter that if Rangers and Celtic were forced to move into English football, would you place them in Premiership, Championship, League 1 or League 2, and here's what you said:

@Charliebhoy72: Right away? Or after 3 seasons of PL money to complement their fanbase & other streams of revenue? On those terms- top 6 Premier League.

Charlie makes a good point about the PL money that would help grow clubs like Rangers and Celtic, yet I don't believe they would be good enough to survive the first season.

@dom_stevenson: Combined Northern League... Same level AFC Wimbledon had to start in.

I explained to Dom that for the purpose of this exercise, I was talking Premiership, Championship, League 1 or League 2. Although technically speaking he is right.

@dom_stevenson: In terms of financial clout and quality, League 1.

I'd have to agree with Dom, Charlie made a good point about Premier League money and revenue, but the clubs in that division wern't given it by choice, they earned their way into the league and Rangers and Celtic would simply have to do the same starting in a division where they could compete.

@Audaciouschip: Prem on the basis of crowds. On current standards though they should play off against other lesser teams. But if they landed in the Prem they'd find the cash to be reasonable #godforbid.

Audaciouschip or Phil as his mates call him, makes a good point about the crowds, much like a Newcastle these clubs could compete with the attendances and fanbase they attract. However, like I've already said, they, in my eyes, would have to build up to this level.

@Boycey_boy: At best they would be mid-table fighting relegation Championship teams!

Boycey_boy (I thought Boycey was a jaffa?) I think Boycey could be right, at their current level would be a struggling Championship/League One team, but they have strong fanbases and maybe they could push on up the leagues.

@I_am_Ryan_Miller: With TV revenue, comfortably a prem side, no question (top 7). Currently within our budgets, Championship.

I_am_Ryan_Miller (I've checked on the databases, I can confirm that he is Ryan Miller) has helped echo the sentiments of most of the replies I received. Now-a-days football is all about the money, and given the right resources any club can achieve greatness. Just look at Man Shitty.

@TheTilehurstEnd The lowest possible level.... League 2.

TheTilehurstEnd (not the actual stand, but Dan) did want them to start in the Northern League, like Dom, but as they both support football league clubs can you blame them?

Most of the responses said that on their current situation, these clubs would be lower half of Championship/League 1, but with the money and revenue from the Premiership, if they were handed a place there would see them push into the top half and into Europe (providing they don't draw Malmo)

Sadly, for some, Rangers and Celtic would never asked to join the English leagues, which makes this post rather pointless and I must apologize for wasting any of your valuable time.

Big thanks to everyone who responded on Twitter.

  1. I thought I'd add seeing as he's a BBC Journalist that Paul Dawson or @Mrpauldawson if your searching on twitter, thinks they would be top half Championship clubs.
