The Ongoing Luka Modric Saga

After Chelsea's latest £27 million pound bid for Luka Modric was rejected, Adam Sharpe discuses the ongoing saga.

And so it rolls on, Luka Modric seems determined to rip the heart out of Tottenham Hotspur by forcing a move to London rivals Chelsea. Modric’s recent comments concerning the ‘gentlemen’s agreement with Daniel Levy were pretty strong stuff but it seems to me there is no such thing as a gentleman’s agreement in football or possible even a gentlemen.  Whatever was said at the time of Modric signing his six year contract only a year ago has clearly been lost in translation, or simply ignored and Luka’s agent perhaps missed a trick not getting the aforementioned agreement in writing.

Modric has openly criticised Levy.
Some might say that the behaviour of Luka Modric is unacceptable, he has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League, well you have to earn the right to be in that competition and to reach the dizzy heights of being beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Real Madrid you have to be able to beat the likes of West Ham at home, or Blackpool away, or Wigan at home, all due respect to those clubs but these were the nature of the disappointing results that cost Spurs a second season in the Champion League.

I appreciate that Luka alone should not be blamed for these results but no one else is aggressively forcing to leave the club, other players are accepting responsibility and planning to learn from last season, progress and get their team back among the elite.  Others might say he has every right to seek success with a bigger club....would Chelsea really be seen as a bigger club…? An argument for another time perhaps.

Tottenham’s ambitions are clear to all that they are building a team to challenge for the Premier League title and be regulars in the Champions League, Modric’s departure could be a devastating setback and one that was intended to be pre-empted by Mr Levy by signing up the top players on long term contracts.  To build a club you need stability just look at Manchester United, loyal long term players and manager has brought success year after year this is surely the model Daniel Levy is looking to emulate.

Rumours that Modric will hand in a transfer request is the latest news, but what does that really achieve? Harry has stated the club already know he wants to leave so writing it down on a piece of paper isn’t really going to change much, is it?

If Modric does eventually move on it will no doubt generate a decent transfer fee in excess of £30 million, so you might assume that Spurs have a back up plan.  A possibility might include securing two top class strikers, Rossi and Llorente perhaps, push Van der Vaart back into the ‘Modric’ role and look for the next Luka Modric, Spurs have been linked with the young Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri, a very talented attacking midfielder who would no doubt do well at Spurs.

Swiss youngster Xherdan Shaqiri could easily replace Modric at White Hart Lane.

Whatever happens with this whole saga it is likely that the fans will never look at Luka in the same light.

On a more positive note it is good to see Michael Dawson quick to openly deny rumours in the press that he is in dispute with the club, it is great to see some loyalty for a change, cheers skip!
